KFC--Kids Fitness Challenge

Although it was toasty outside, that didn't stop us from having fun. Even I got into the fun by playing volleyball with the kids. I think the kids were surprised that I could play.--LOL. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, no one capture my awesome serving skills on film.

The Giver--Character

Scrapbook

One of the many activities the students will experience is creating a scrapbook. The page 6th graders are working on in the photos is a character. Very little description of what the characters look like are given in the novel, so it is up to the students to create an image of what a character would look like to him/her. We are also making connections to the Bible because there are very few descriptions of what people written in the Bible look like too. Through discussion the students are beginning to see that how a character behaves or his/her actions are more important than the general appearance. This approach also helps students to dig deeper when they describe a character in a novel.
Of course you can see by the photos, the students are having fun while creating their characters. You can also see that the students enjoy using ALL my art supplies at one time.--LOL!

SWS May Crowning 2018

Students Honor Mary

Some of the students wanted to take a picture with Mary after the Crowning.
Mary, Mother of God, please help watch over all my students so they are safe, healthy, and happy.
Amen

The Giver

Recreation Time

In The Giver, by Lois Lowry, when a Community member turns Twelve, he/she is assigned their job, or as it is called in the novel, your Assignment. Students participated in the Ceremony of Twelves and some were thrilled with their Assignment and some were disappointed and even angry. This was my goal, for the students to understand the theme of freedom of choice. Two students were assigned the Assignment as Recreation Directors and several students were assigned as Recreation Committee Members. Below is a short video and a few photos of the students playing a game organized and run by the students.

Financial Literacy

FUTURE SMART

6th grade students were invited to participate in Mass Mutual & Everfi's Future Smart program. It's a wonderful opportunity to learn about financial literacy through a digital program. Mr. Maj, from Everfi, visited the students to introduce the program and answer questions.
