Design An Experiment

Potential Energy

In sixth grade science class, students worked in collaborative teams to design an experiment based on the question--How Can You Change The Amount Of Potential Energy? Students used supplies such as meter sticks, pennies, cars, and triple beam balances to write and test out their design plan. What was really fun was when the seventh grade students joined us in Liebrich Hall. There, sixth graders led a team of seventh graders, who tested the experiment by following the directions and procedures that the sixth grade students wrote. 

Thanks to the seventh graders, the sixth graders got a first-hand look at what it is like to be the teacher and a scientist. All the sixth graders agreed that conducting a science lab is easier than designing one. We also learned that when writing steps in a process, the directions must be specific and clear. I can't wait for my wonderful sixth graders to try designing their next experiment, which will be designing a hand-warmer and building it.
