Door Decorating Day!

6th Grade Door Decorating Day

The 6th grade classroom was filled with Christmas joy, as student collaborated to decorate the classroom door. I knew they would both the boys door and girls door would be great, but the end result was actually Santa-tastic! With Christmas music in the background, Mrs. Z.'s little elves got busy with making their plans become a reality. My little elves also had first hand experience with how difficult it can be to plan, organized, and complete a project, while working together in a respectable manner.
It was fun to watch the excitement on their faces as they looked at their finished project. Boy, I love my job!

Brother Mike's Story Corner

Brother Mike's Story Corner

This year, our principal, Brother Mike started something new with the students at SWS; he reads to them. Every week, Brother Mike is making the rounds to visit every classroom to read to the students. What a great way for him to get to know the kids and for the kids to get to know the principal. Recently, Brother Mike read us a story about Pearl Harbor, which is remembered on December 7. Brother Mike showed us a hidden talent, by using his Winston Churchill and President Roosevelt voices to help give a little extra pizzazz to his storytelling talents.
Keeping in step with the Christmas season, Brother Mike will spend a couple Story Corner sessions by reading a Christmas book called, A Shiloh Christmas. The students and I look forward to his visits.

Shopping at Santa's Secret Shop

6th graders enjoyed shopping for special gifts at Santa's Secret Shop. I enjoyed watching how serious the students were trying to find that special gift for a special person.

Financial Literacy at SWS

CIBC visits SWS

Through Big Shoulders, employees of CIBC visited Kdg-8th grade to teach the students about finances. I was impressed with the depth of questions the students asked our two special visitors. From talking to our guests, they were impressed too with their behavior, participation level, and high level questions. I think there are some students who might be working in the financial world when they grow up.

5th Grade Social Studies---Mystery Hangout

Fun Times in 5th Grade Social Studies Class

Students worked collaboratively to guess the mystery location of another 5th grade class with an activity called Mystery Hangout. This was the 1st time Mrs. Z.'s 5th gr social studies class participated and they did a great job. Students from both schools take turns asking yes/no questions, using geography terms. The goal is identify the location of the other class before they guess ours. Even though the students asked great questions, the other school guessed Illinois before we were able to figure out that they are in North Dakota. This is a great activity for students to work together by using maps, online maps, formulating questions, speaking clearly, listening carefully, and using digital citizenship skills.

Students asked questions such as--
1. Are you east of the Mississippi River?
2. Do the Rocky Mountains run through your state?
3. Do you border Canada?
This is a great activity to practice geography and map skills.

Both 5th and 6th grade students enjoy Mystery Hangouts and I can't wait to help guide the students through the next one. Oh, the students have their shirts either inside out or backwards because we didn't want the mystery school having any clues about the name of our school or were SWS is located. My goal is to participate in Mystery Hangouts where the mystery school is in another country and even a different continent.

Topographic Maps--Science

Hands-On Science

Students worked together to create dough that was used to form a landform model. Then using transparent film, 2 qt container, ruler, spaghetti, and colored water, students made a topographic map. After recording data, adding map elements, and answering comprehensive questions, students then turned their map into another map, called a profile map. We also examined the purpose and uses of topographic maps. This was a messy, but fun lab.

Exploring Green Screen Technology

Light! Camera! Action!

Students worked collaboratively while exploring a green screen app. Unfortunately, after spending a lot of time and creative thought ran into difficulty while trying to edit; the app kept crashing. Since they couldn't save their video the footage was lost. The uncut version was saved, but the group asked for the video not to be posted. I understand their frustration and disappointment. The experienced a tough lesson with learning that technology as wonderful as it is, doesn't always work. Another group, deleted their video from the iPad.

Here are the three remaining groups who simply just had fun using an app for the first time. Soon the students will work on creating a video based on our current novel study, My Louisiana Sky, by Kimberly Willis Holt.

Some students preferred to behind the scenes and worked as the camera person.

Here are some photos of the students exploring with green screen technology.
